Walt's World Wednesday - When to Go?

One of the most asked question when talking about Disney world is “When is the BEST time to visit?” I always answer “Anytime is great to visit”. The tourist always laugh and then continue to try to get an answer or an exact week. After a few smiles and “but really when is it the best time to visit,” I ask them what they are looking for: crowds, weather or celebrations.

Though the “always” answer is not always true, each time of the years bring something different to Disney World.  Let us break them down:

Crowds:

Sadly I don’t believe “slow season” exists anymore. Many parents have started taking their kids out of school to beat the crowds, thus eliminating the slow times. The five minutes line for rides and walk in reservations at your favorite restaurant just don’t happened anymore or on super rare occasions. There are however less crowded days.

In terms of Crowds the BEST times to visits is…

  • Second and Last week in January (Minus the Marathon Weekend)
  • Beginning of February
  • The second half of August
  • Middle of September (After Labor Day)
  • Late October on the weekdays
  • The week before Thanksgiving
  • The first two weeks of December

In Terms of Crowds the WORST time to visit is...

  • First week in January
  • President Day
  • Spring Break (Beginning of March to Middle of April)
  • Easter
  • Middle of May
  • All of June
  • All of July
  • Early August
  • The week of Thanksgiving
  • The week of Christmas through the week of New Year

Though it is getting more and more popular each year, September has been the best time to visit in the past in terms of crowds

Celebrations

To offer a different experience, Disney World has many celebrations during the year. Each celebration changes the feel of Disney World and bring something new to discover. Some families (mostly returning tourist) do want to see the celebrations even if it brings more crowds to experience Disney World in a different light.

Here are the following current (2015) celebrations that Disney World offers.

  • Disney Runs (January, February, April, November)
  • Flower and Garden Festival
  • Star Wars Weekends
  • Orlando Gay Days
  • Frozen Summer Fun
  • Food and Wine (My favorite time of the year)
  • Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party
  • Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party
  • Holidays Around the World

If you are a returning guest and have never seen one of these celebrations, I suggest next time plan a vacation around the event. It adds vary!

Weather

Here in the sunshine state we have quite the reputation for hot and humid weather. If you are not use to it, it is unbearable at time. Who am I kidding? You never get used to the humid.

The coolest times in Florida are January to April with temperatures averaging between high 60s and low 80s. It is always not as rainy as summer. If you come in the summer, expect it to rain every day in the afternoon for at least 30 minutes.

The Down Side of "Slow" Season

The downside to going in “off season” is that the parks trim back their hours. Magic Kingdom can close as early as 7pm and Animal Kingdom as early as 5pm (this will probably be changing though next year with them building a nighttime show). Getting night rides can be hard in some cases.

They also close popular high demand rides down for refurbishment during less crowded times. If you have a must do attraction, make sure it is not close or you may be losing out by going during the slower times.

There you have it! Depending on what you are looking for anytime of the year can be the best time to travel.
